California site celebrates Family Day
More than 2,000 people spread out across Sandia’s California campus for Family Day on Sept. 14, getting a glimpse of the exceptional work done in the national interest by Sandia researchers and professionals from all over the world.
Kilimanjaro: Together at the top
After seven days traversing the rainforest, rocky cliffs and alpine desert of Tanzania, a group of current and retired Sandians made the final ascent to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro last fall. They had trained nearly a year for the moment, yet nothing could have fully prepared them for the deep sense of accomplishment and satisfaction of reaching the summit of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain.
Sandia opens doors to family, friends
Family Day is a rare opportunity for Sandia’s workforce to show family and friends the critical work they perform in the interest of the nation. This year’s Albuquerque event is Saturday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and the Livermore event is Saturday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Patio posters show promise of interns’ future
Posters lined the shaded areas of the GAA Event Pad on July 24 as interns showed off 36 different projects they have worked on this summer, giving oral presentations explaining their work to those who stopped by.
California campus changes ahead
The Sandia/California campus is in a state of evolution. An unprecedented spate of hiring to achieve mission goals means the space at the Livermore campus must be reevaluated with an eye to the future.
Getting to the nuts and bolts of nuts and bolts
After more than five years, a mathematical breakthrough devised by a structural engineer and a computational scientist may save Sandia time and resources to test complex systems. The method is now being used in production in Sandia's Sierra code, and the designers say its potential is limited only by researchers' imagination.
Sandia helps Puerto Rico grid resilience
The Sandia-developed Microgrid Design Toolkit provides what-if analysis of microgrid design choices to provide quantitative insights to decision makers for hybrid energy solutions. Using the MDT tool, utilities and other community stakeholders can identify vulnerabilities in infrastructure particularly susceptible to natural disasters and related consequences.
Help wanted: People with passion for national security
Associate Labs Director Andy McIlroy said Integrated Security Solutions is on track to meet its projected hiring goals for fiscal year 2019. The hiring team's primary goal is to help implement processes where new-hires can feel welcome to reach out with questions and ideas to help make their integration into Sandia as smooth as possible.
Operation Backpack
Thanks to the generous donations of Sandia employees, 240 backpacks were donated this year to the children of military families at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico and 55 backpacks were donated to the children of Bay Area military families in California.
‘Safety is a State of Mind(fulness)’
Celebrated annually in June, National Safety Month is an important opportunity to raise awareness about safety and health in the workplace. Throughout the month, Sandia Health Benefits and Employee Services and Safety organizations at the Livermore and Albuquerque campuses teamed up to host an array of speakers, activities and events.
