Sandia Labs manufacturing spinoff steps into national market
Sandia’s Entrepreneurial Separation to Transfer Technology program helped Joe Beck and Eric Branson, both former employees, launch their small business. The Albuquerque-based Advanced Manufactured Power Solutions, or AMPS, is a custom manufacturing company builds battery packs, cables and other small components of larger machines.

The Department of Energy hosted its Summer ’19 New Mexico Small Business Expo in Albuquerque Aug. 6-7, featuring Sandia and other DOE contractors.
Praising Sandia’s culture of innovation
Sandia hosted its annual Innovation Celebrations in Livermore and Albuquerque May 16 to recognize the Labs' innovators. The celebration honored individuals who received patents, copyrights or licensed royalties, or created other intellectual property in 2018.
Nanomaterials researcher wins mid-career research award
Sandia materials scientist Hongyou Fan is the sole recipient of this year’s Mid-Career Researcher Award from the Materials Research Society, the largest U.S. materials society. Hongyou was chosen for “outstanding contributions in nanoparticle self-assembly of functional nanomaterials.”
Mirage software automates design of optical metamaterials
Sandia software developers have created the first inverse-design software for optical metamaterials. The new software lets users design science-fiction-like materials with the same efficiency that architects use when they draft building plans.
Sandia Labs spending tops $1 billion, economic impact booms in FY18
Sandia spent nearly $1.3 billion in goods and services in fiscal year 2018, with spending on New Mexico companies up by $55 million compared to the previous year, according to the Labs’ latest economic impact report.

Thanks to the addition of a heating element, Sandia's SpinDx can now perform both protein and nucleic acid tests to identify nearly any cause of illness, including viruses, bacteria, toxins or immune system markers of chemical agent exposure.
The benefits of engineered light
The study of LED lighting is still in its infancy, according to Sandia researchers. "Engineered light," light intentionally controlled in time, space and spectral content, can reward human optics with better lighting, help regulate human health and productivity, efficiently stimulate plant growth and increase nutritional value, and more.
Sandia researchers win five R&D 100 awards
Sandia inventions and co-inventions have captured five R&D 100 Awards for 2018. Competitors for the awards include an international pool of universities, corporations and government labs, and the sole criterion for winning is “demonstrable technological significance compared with competing products and technologies.” Since 1976, Sandia has earned a total of 124 awards.
