Optimized Control of Distribution Switches to Balance a Low Cost Photovoltaic Microgrid

Conference Record of the IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference

Jones, Christian B.; Ropp, Michael E.; Hernandez-Alvidrez, Javier; Darbali-Zamora, Rachid

Dynamic operations of electric power switches in microgrid mode allows for distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems to support a critical load and enable the transfer of electrical power to non-critical loads. Instead of relying on an expensive system that includes a constant generation source (e.g. fossil fuel based generators), this work assess the potential balance of load and PV generation to properly charge a critical load battery while also supporting non-critical loads during the day. This work assumes that the battery is sized to only support the critical load and that the PV at the critical load is undersized. To compensate for the limited power capacity, a battery charging algorithm predicts and defines battery demand throughout the day; a particle swarm optimization (PSO) scheme connects and disconnects switch sections inside a distribution system with the objective of minimizing the difference between load and generation. The PSO reconfiguration scheme allows for continuous operations of a critical load as well as inclusion of non-critical loads.

Influence of Inverter-Based Resources on Microgrid Protection: Part 1: Microgrids in Radial Distribution Systems

IEEE Power and Energy Magazine

Reno, Matthew J.; Brahma, Sukumar; Bidram, Ali; Ropp, Michael E.

This article is the first in a two-part series on the influence of inverter-based resources (IBRs) s on microgrid protection. In part one, the focus is on microgrids deployed on radial circuits. This article discusses some of the challenges related to the protection of IBR-based microgrids and presents some ongoing research and solutions in the area. The different controls for IBRs are discussed to present how their short current signatures and dynamic response under faults impact microgrid protection. Recently, microgrids have gained much attention in the electric power industry due to their capability for improving power system reliability and resiliency, their impact on increasing the use of renewable resources, the reduced cost of distributed energy resource (DER) equipment, and the continuing evolution of applicable codes and standards.

Secondary Networks and Protection: Implications for DER and Microgrid Interconnection

Ropp, Michael E.; Reno, Matthew J.; Bower, Ward; Reilly, James; Venkata, S.S.

Secondary networks are used to supply power to loads that require very high reliability and are in use around the world, particularly in dense urban downtown areas. The protection of secondary network systems poses unique challenges. The addition of distributed energy resources (DERs) to secondary networks can compound these challenges, and deployment of microgrids on secondary networks will create a new set of challenges and opportunities. This report discusses secondary networks and their protection, the challenges associated with interconnecting DERs to a secondary network, issues expected to be associated with creating microgrids on secondary networks, standards that deal with these challenges and issues, and suggestions for research and development foci that would yield new means for addressing these challenges.

High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse Testing of Photovoltaic Modules

Bowman, Tyler; Flicker, Jack D.; Guttromson, Ross; Halligan, Matthew; Llanes, Rodrigo; Ropp, Michael E.

This report details the test setup, process, and results for radiated susceptibility testing of multicrystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules as part of the EMP-Resilient Electric Grid Grand Challenge Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Sandia National Laboratories. Testing was conducted over October 10-17, 2019, where 8 photovoltaic modules were exposed to E1 transient pulses with peak field levels up to 100 kV/m. Modules were terminated in a resistive load representing connected components. State of health testing conducted via I-V curve tracing of the photovoltaic modules showed no observable loss of device function due to large electric field transients. Differential mode currents were measured on the order of 10's of amps for up to a microsecond following the radiated field pulse. Common mode currents took the form of a damped sinusoid with a maximum peak of 10's to 100's of amps with a resonance near 60 MHz.
