EMS Environmental Excellence Awards
This April 22 marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Though Sandians were unable to celebrate onsite, the Labs’ annual Environmental Management System Environmental Excellence Awards honored those who help to reduce ecological impacts, in the spirit of resource conservation and environmental protection.
Sandia collects $250K for Native American neighbors
When COVID-19 began ravaging Native American communities in the southwest in April, a sense of urgency started to mount for Sandia tribal government relations program manager Laurence Brown. He and other volunteers sparked a grassroots effort that led to a Labs-wide fundraising drive, resulting in donations of more than $250,000 for the Native American Relief Fund.
Printing face shields for the front lines
Teens who learned to build 3D printers during a weeklong robotics camp at Sandia last year have used them to make more than 3,000 face shields that have been donated to medical professionals and first responders in New Mexico.
Pulling together while standing apart
When Sandia’s Albuquerque campus shifted predominantly to telework in consonance with the New Mexico governor’s stay-at-home order, it added a whole new level of complexity and pressure to Sandia's Mobile Guardian Transport project team. Faced with the challenge, they found new ways to work together while staying safe from COVID-19.
Walk MS: 2020 goes virtual
Abilities Champions of Sandia, formerly the Disability Awareness Committee, organized Labs workforce members to participate virtually in Walk MS: 2020 at both the Livermore, California, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, sites.
Four Sandia leaders honored among 40 Under Forty
Amid the challenges New Mexico is facing, 40 outstanding young professionals are bringing enormous optimism to the state — and four Sandia leaders are a part of that cohort. Jim Cleary, Emily Gaffney, Bernadette Gallegos and Johnathon Huff have joined the ranks of Albuquerque Business First’s 40 Under Forty honorees, recognized for their professional achievement, leadership and the critical roles they play in the community.
NM distillery partners with Sandia on hand sanitizer
In response to widespread shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wayward Sons Craft-Distillery in Santa Fe has reconfigured its operations to produce a hand sanitizer. The owners worked with Sandia through the New Mexico Small Business Assistance program to test and confirm that their product meets standards set by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Finding a big life on the open road
Brian Olson doesn’t have weekends like everyone else. He spends his days away from Sandia driving people all over the state. From ferrying the elite athletes of the National Football League to and from games to saving the lives of 86 people during a mass shooting, it’s been an interesting trip.
Long may you run
Friends and family of former Sandia mechanical engineer Larry Johnson, who turned 100 in April, say they have no doubt he’ll keep showing up like he has done in many areas throughout his life. Johnson retired at age 75 after 38 years at the Labs.
Serving up kindness
More than a dozen Sandia/California employees and their friends and families helped fight food insecurities throughout the Bay Area with the Alameda County Community Food Bank at the second quarter Sandia Serves Saturday event in February.
