Planning for a pandemic
In 2005, a report directed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security outlined the potential effects of a global pandemic in prophetic detail. It was one of the ways Sandians laid the foundation for the U.S. response to COVID-19.
On-site health checks
A daily health check is now required for anyone accessing a Sandia facility, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Those who do not have access to the Health Check mobile or desktop app can visit an in-person Health Check location prior to entering the site.
Portable shelters protect medical workers, save PPE
Sandia is offering, free of charge, the design and complete instruction manual for building a low-cost, drive-up outdoor shelter that shields health care workers conducting COVID-19 testing.
Working well to stay well
With a record number of Sandia’s workforce now working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Labs’ ergonomic team has helped make the transition to a home office safe for employees. Sandia's ergonomics professionals are fully engaged on a daily basis with educating, training and assisting the workforce using the principles of ergonomic science.
A Sandian’s experience with COVID-19
Following his recovery from COVID-19 in March, Sandian Don Lifke describes his experience with the disease and his path to get tested for antibodies. He has donated convalescent plasma and is encouraging anyone who has recovered from COVID-19 to do the same.

Sandia is using a phased approach to return to normal operations over the coming months, while continuing maximum telework as much as possible.
EMS Environmental Excellence Awards
This April 22 marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Though Sandians were unable to celebrate onsite, the Labs’ annual Environmental Management System Environmental Excellence Awards honored those who help to reduce ecological impacts, in the spirit of resource conservation and environmental protection.
Pulling together while standing apart
When Sandia’s Albuquerque campus shifted predominantly to telework in consonance with the New Mexico governor’s stay-at-home order, it added a whole new level of complexity and pressure to Sandia's Mobile Guardian Transport project team. Faced with the challenge, they found new ways to work together while staying safe from COVID-19.
Heroes waiting to be discovered
Since the beginnings of Sandia National Laboratories, Sandians have made the unthinkable not only thinkable, but also plannable and doable. Over time, we’ve tempered ourselves, studying and devising an assortment of ways to deter, defend against and blunt all manner of threats.
Sandia health educator invited to speak at Virgin Pulse HERO forum
Virgin Pulse invited Sandia health educator and program coordinator Callie Lovato to speak at HEROForum19 in early September. A national non-profit, the Health Enhancement Research Organization has a mission to identify and share best practices in employee health and well-being.
