It isn’t even 2019 yet, but Sandia has already kicked off a new year of supporting science in elementary schools. The first Family STEAM Night at Sankofa Elementary in Oakland, California, featured a carnival theme that attracted dozens of students and their parents.
Mayor Keller talks ‘One Albuquerque’
Albuquerque faces a diverse set of problems, including discouraging crime rates, economic struggles, and young talent leaving the state, and many will need the big-picture, analytical solutions for which Sandia’s workforce is known, Mayor Tim Keller told attendees at Sandia's November Community Engagement Speaker Series event. Keller spoke about the challenges and outlined his strategies for moving the community forward.
2018 HENAAC Luminary Mark Rodriguez
Sandia materials scientist Mark Rodriguez has been presented with the Luminary Award at this year's Great Minds in STEM Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference. Luminary honorees are professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics who initiate, collaborate and lead key programs and research and make significant contributions to the Hispanic technical community as leaders and role models.
My story: Positive energy, opportunities highlight Native American Heritage Month
In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, Sandian Rachael Gutierrez shares her story of childhood visits to her relatives on the Yomba Shoshone Reservation in central Nevada. Rachael chose to study urban planning out of a desire to improve reservation life and encourage people to connect with their cultures, which led her to Sandia.
Kenneth Armijo wins UNM Zia award
Sandia mechanical engineer Kenneth Armijo, who leads bilingual family science events by night and researches solar energy and assists small businesses by day, received the prestigious Zia Award from his alma mater, the University of New Mexico.
New strategy helps triple Labs veteran hires
A new, deliberate and strategic military veteran hiring initiative at Sandia has paid off. The number of military veterans hired at Sandia tripled in fiscal year 2018 and marked the highest veteran hiring rate in the history of the Labs.

Sandia helps girls develop a taste for STEM subjects
The 2018 San Joaquin Expanding Your Horizons conference assembled 550 girls in the 6th through 12th grades to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The girls came from nearby San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties to attend the Sept. 22 conference at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Second act: Sandia retirees band together to help small businesses with tech challenges
Technology Retirees Economic Catalysts, established in 2015 to connect Sandia retirees with small businesses that need technical and other expertise. TREC was launched when Technology Ventures Corp. asked Ron Moya, a retired mechanical engineer, to flesh out an idea he had to engage the Labs retiree community in economic development.
Sandia Gives Campaign October 8-26, 2018
The Sandia Gives Campaign is the Labs’ annual opportunity to come together and act with the common goal of helping our communities through the United Way. During this year’s Sandia Gives campaign, donors can continue to designate funds for any of the community collaborative efforts, including the Family Advocacy Center, Mission: Graduate and Mission: Families.
