Building Sandia: 1940s to 1960s
Sandia’s built environment tells a story of its adaptation and vision for the future. The buildings and structures reflect a rich and varied 70-year architectural history that first began to take shape in the fall of 1945, when the Los Alamos based Z Division started moving down to the site of the current Albuquerque campus.
2,020 in 2020
The annual Sandia Gives campaign kicks off in October. Sandia has a long tradition of giving generously to both the United Way and 501(c)(3) charities, beginning with its first United Way campaign in 1957. This year, the campaign has set a goal to sign up 2,020 new donors for calendar year 2020.
Record-breaking crowds attend Sandia’s New Mexico Family Day
Family and friends walked the usually restricted streets of Sandia’s Albuquerque campus during the Sept. 7 Family Day event, to show support for their loved ones and see where they work. The long tradition of Family Day is an opportunity to show friends and loved ones some of the interconnected teamwork and facilities they don't usually get to see.
California site celebrates Family Day

Kilimanjaro: Together at the top
After seven days traversing the rainforest, rocky cliffs and alpine desert of Tanzania, a group of current and retired Sandians made the final ascent to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro last fall. They had trained nearly a year for the moment, yet nothing could have fully prepared them for the deep sense of accomplishment and satisfaction of reaching the summit of the world’s tallest free-standing mountain.
Second act: Sandia retirees band together to help small businesses with tech challenges
Technology Retirees Economic Catalysts, established in 2015 to connect Sandia retirees with small businesses that need technical and other expertise. TREC was launched when Technology Ventures Corp. asked Ron Moya, a retired mechanical engineer, to flesh out an idea he had to engage the Labs retiree community in economic development.

Since 2004, the rate at which solar cell power is installed has doubled every 22 months and is now in excess of 0.1 terawatts per year. Research driving some of this expansion began right here at Sandia more than 40 years ago.
