A finite element multiscale capability for nonlinear quasistatic stress analysis

Failure modeling is inherently a multi length scale phenomenon that requires a failure model and a computational method that solves for stress/strain gradients at interesting locations. Focusing on the computational method, we recognize that the mesh resolution must be relatively fine in regions where failure is expected and relatively coarse elsewhere. Furthermore, in some modeling approaches the topology in the structural model is different than that required in the fine scale model where failure is to be predicted. This necessarily precludes approaches such as h-adaptivity. We are therefore led to consider multiscale approaches to solve these problems.This work describes an approach to solve multiple (a reference scale and fine scale) coupled boundary value problems for the purpose of nonlinear quasistatic stress analysis. Two examples are included: one example illustrates the multiscale solution strategy to perform quasistatic stress analysis and the other demonstrates the computational beginnings of the ability to model material failure. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. New approximations for elastic spheres under an oscillating torsional couple

The Lubkin solution for two spheres pressed together and then subjected to a monotonically increasing axial couple is examined numerically. The Deresiewicz asymptotic solution is compared to the full solution and its utility is evaluated. Alternative approximations for the Lubkin solution are suggested and compared. One approximation is a Pade rational function which matches the analytic solution over all rotations. The other is an exponential approximation that reproduces the asymptotic values of the analytic solution at infinitesimal and infinite rotations. Finally, finite element solutions for the Lubkin problem are compared with the exact and approximate solutions.

Microscale Modeling and Simulation

The Microsystems Subgrid Physics project is intended to address gaps between developing high-performance modeling and simulation capabilities and microdomain specific physics. The initial effort has focused on incorporating electrostatic excitations, adhesive surface interactions, and scale dependent material and thermal properties into existing modeling capabilities. Developments related to each of these efforts are summarized, and sample applications are presented. While detailed models of the relevant physics are still being developed, a general modeling framework is emerging that can be extended to incorporate evolving material and surface interaction modules.

Bending effects in the frictional energy dissipation in lap joints

Frictional energy dissipation in joints is an issue of long-standing interest in the effort to predict damping of built up structures. Even obtaining a qualitative understanding of how energy dissipation depends on applied loads has not yet been accomplished. Goodman[l] postulated that in harmonic loading, the energy dissipation per cycle would go as the cube of the amplitude of loading. Though experiment does support a power-law relationship, the exponent tends to be lower than Goodman predicted. Recent calculations discussed here suggest that the cause of that deviation has to with reshaping of the contact patch over each loading period.

PRONTO3D users` instructions: A transient dynamic code for nonlinear structural analysis

This report provides an updated set of users` instructions for PRONTO3D. PRONTO3D is a three-dimensional, transient, solid dynamics code for analyzing large deformations of highly nonlinear materials subjected to extremely high strain rates. This Lagrangian finite element program uses an explicit time integration operator to integrate the equations of motion. Eight-node, uniform strain, hexahedral elements and four-node, quadrilateral, uniform strain shells are used in the finite element formulation. An adaptive time step control algorithm is used to improve stability and performance in plasticity problems. Hourglass distortions can be eliminated without disturbing the finite element solution using either the Flanagan-Belytschko hourglass control scheme or an assumed strain hourglass control scheme. All constitutive models in PRONTO3D are cast in an unrotated configuration defined using the rotation determined from the polar decomposition of the deformation gradient. A robust contact algorithm allows for the impact and interaction of deforming contact surfaces of quite general geometry. The Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics method has been embedded into PRONTO3D using the contact algorithm to couple it with the finite element method.

An algorithm for enforcement of contact constraints in quasistatic applications using matrix-free solution algorithms

A contact enforcement algorithm has been developed for matrix-free quasistatic finite element techniques. Matrix-free (iterative) solution algorithms such as nonlinear Conjugate Gradients (CG) and Dynamic Relaxation (DR) are distinctive in that the number of iterations required for convergence is typically of the same order as the number of degrees of freedom of the model. From iteration to iteration the contact normal and tangential forces vary significantly making contact constraint satisfaction tenuous. Furthermore, global determination and enforcement of the contact constraints every iteration could be questioned on the grounds of efficiency. This work addresses this situation by introducing an intermediate iteration for treating the active gap constraint and at the same time exactly (kinematically) enforcing the linearized gap rate constraint for both frictionless and frictional response.

Simulation of orthogonal cutting with smooth particle hydrodynamics

There is an active literature on the simulation of cutting processes through finite element methods. Such efforts are motivated by the enormous economic importance of machining processes and the desire to adjust processes so as to optimize product and throughput, but suffer from some difficulties inherent to the finite element method. An alternative approach, which appears to overcome most of those difficulties, is that of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).Though some finite element work is reviewed here, the focus of this paper is on the demonstration of the SPH technique of to simulate orthogonal cutting.
