Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Software Quality Plan: ASC Software Quality Engineering Practices (V.4.0)

Turgeon, Jennifer T.; Lujan, Christopher J.; Schneider, J.T.

The purpose of the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Software Quality Plan is to clearly identify the software quality engineering practices that are the basis for continually improving the quality of ASC software products. This plan defines the SNL ASC Program software quality engineering practices and provides a mapping of these practices to Laboratory Policy System IT008: Provide Quality Software Policy. This plan also identifies ASC Program Management and the software project teams' responsibilities in implementing quality software engineering practices and in assessing progress towards achieving their software quality goals.

Sandia National Laboratories Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Appraisal Method for the Implementation of the ASC Software Quality Engineering Practices (V.2.0)

Turgeon, Jennifer T.; Lujan, Christopher J.; Schneider, J.T.

This document provides a guide to the process of conducting software appraisals under the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) ASC Program. The goal of this document is to describe a common methodology for planning, conducting, and reporting results of software appraisals thereby enabling: 1) Identification of improvements in implementation of the software quality engineering (SQE) practices identified in the ASC Software Quality Plan across the ASC Program against objective baselines. 2) Feedback from project teams on SQE opportunities for improvement. 3) Identification of strengths and opportunities for improvement for individual project teams. 4) Guidance to the ASC Program on the focus of future SQE activities. Document contents include process descriptions, templates to promote consistent conduct of appraisals, and an explanation of the relationship of this procedure to the SNL ASC software program. The activities described by this document are under the oversight of SNL ASC Program Director and SNL ASC Program Manager.

Contingency Contractor Optimization Phase 3 Sustainment Verification and Validation V&V) Report - Contingency Contractor Optimization Engineering - Prototype

Bandlow, Alisa B.; Durfee, Justin D.; Frazier, Christopher R.; Jones, Katherine A.; Gearhart, Jared L.; Adair, Kristin L.; Turgeon, Jennifer T.

The reports and test plans contained within this document serve as supporting materials to the activities listed within the “Contingency Contractor Optimization Tool – Prototype (CCOT-P) Verification & Validation Plan” [1]. The activities included test development, testing, peer reviews, and expert reviews. The engineering prototype reviews were done for both the software and the mathematical model used in CCOT-P. Section 2 includes the peer and expert review reports, which summarize the findings from each of the reviews and document the resolution of any issues. Section 3 details the test plans that were followed for functional testing of the application through the interface. Section 4 describes the unit tests that were run on the code.

Advancing cyber resilience analysis with performance- based metrics from infrastructure assessments

Cyber Behavior: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications

Vugrin, Eric D.; Turgeon, Jennifer T.

Cyber resilience is becoming increasingly recognized as a critical component of comprehensive cybersecurity practices. Current cyber resilience assessment approaches are primarily qualitative methods, making validation of their resilience analyses and enhancement recommendations difficult, if not impossible. The evolution of infrastructure resilience assessment methods has paralleled that of their cyber counterparts. However, the development of performance-based assessment methods has shown promise for overcoming the validation challenge for infrastructure systems. This article describes a hybrid infrastructure resilience assessment approach that combines both qualitative analysis techniques with performance-based metrics. The qualitative component enables identification of system features that limit resilience, and the quantitative metrics can be used to evaluate and confirm the effectiveness of proposed mitigation options. The authors propose adaptation of this methodology for cyber resilience analysis. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the approach could be applied to a hypothetical system.

Sandia National Laboratories Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) software quality plan : ASC software quality engineering practices Version 3.0

Turgeon, Jennifer T.; Minana, Molly A.; Pilch, Martin P.

The purpose of the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Software Quality Plan is to clearly identify the practices that are the basis for continually improving the quality of ASC software products. Quality is defined in the US Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Agency (DOE/NNSA) Quality Criteria, Revision 10 (QC-1) as 'conformance to customer requirements and expectations'. This quality plan defines the SNL ASC Program software quality engineering (SQE) practices and provides a mapping of these practices to the SNL Corporate Process Requirement (CPR) 001.3.6; 'Corporate Software Engineering Excellence'. This plan also identifies ASC management's and the software project teams responsibilities in implementing the software quality practices and in assessing progress towards achieving their software quality goals. This SNL ASC Software Quality Plan establishes the signatories commitments to improving software products by applying cost-effective SQE practices. This plan enumerates the SQE practices that comprise the development of SNL ASC's software products and explains the project teams opportunities for tailoring and implementing the practices.

Sustaining knowledge in the neutron generator community and benchmarking study

Huff, Tameka B.; Turgeon, Jennifer T.; Baldonado, Esther B.; Stubblefield, W.A.; Kennedy, Bryan C.; Saba, Antony S.

In 2004, the Responsive Neutron Generator Product Deployment department embarked upon a partnership with the Systems Engineering and Analysis knowledge management (KM) team to develop knowledge management systems for the neutron generator (NG) community. This partnership continues today. The most recent challenge was to improve the current KM system (KMS) development approach by identifying a process that will allow staff members to capture knowledge as they learn it. This 'as-you-go' approach will lead to a sustainable KM process for the NG community. This paper presents a historical overview of NG KMSs, as well as research conducted to move toward sustainable KM.
