Synthesis of water-soluble mono- and ditopic imidazoliums for carbene ligands

Synthesis of ditopic imidazoliums was achieved using a modular step-wise procedure. The procedure itself is amenable to a wide array of functional groups that can be incorporated into the imidazolium architecture.
