Exascale Earth System Model will harness the next level of supercomputer

Image of Exascale Earth System Model

Sandia visualization experts are working with climate scientists to visualize complex simulation results from the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) as part of a DOE project sponsored by the Office of Science. The Sandia team has developed visualization workflows that incorporate DOE open-source visualization tools like ParaView with commercial visual effects tools such as Houdini, Unity, and the Universal Scene Description (USD) data format to create high-quality visualization, animations, and content for virtual and augmented reality. Two types of simulations visualized for this project include a simulation of the full-earth water cycle and an atmosphere-only model with a reduced representation of the Earth to simulate supercell thunderstorm formation.
