Toward an Electromagnetic Event Resilient Grid

Proceedings of the IEEE

Pennington, Heather M.; Hanley, Charles J.; Rogers, Jonathan D.

The threat of a large-scale electromagnetic event having a negative impact on the electric grid is real. Whether human-caused, via the detonation of a nuclear device, or natural, via a high-intensity burst of solar radiation, our historic experience with these phenomena indicates that as a global community, we should be prepared for such events and know how to mitigate their impacts. Current studies and related discussions provide a wide range of damage assessments for these events. We recommend continuing current technical investigations and research as well as strengthening collaboration between stakeholders and experts. This would ensure future threats are addressed in a timely and effective manner.

Solid Rocket Motor Acoustic Testing

Rogers, Jonathan D.

Acoustic data are often required for the determination of launch and powered flight loads for rocket systems and payloads. Such data are usually acquired during test firings of the solid rocket motors. In the current work, these data were obtained for two tests at a remote test facility where we were visitors. This paper describes the data acquisition and the requirements for working at a remote site, interfacing with the test hosts.

Issues in workforce composition analysis

Rogers, Jonathan D.

An issue of paramount interest to US industry is the supply and quality of human resources available for this country`s scientific and technological activities. The changing composition of the workforce and the responsibility that an organization has to assure equal opportunity, give rise to various issues. This paper discusses some of the issues associated with the scientific and technical workforce. Specifically, it explores some of the questions pertaining to workforce composition and measures of workforce composition. This paper should be useful to those responsible for personnel policies.

The impact of technology on the economy

Rogers, Jonathan D.

This paper discusses, in a general way, the influence of technology on the economy. The target audience is engineers who are involved in technology development but who are not especially familiar with economics. The measure used for describing the health of an economy is productivity. The impact of technological developments on productivity is discussed.

Testing in combined dynamic environments

Journal of the IES

Rogers, Jonathan D.

The combined dynamic environments of vibration and linear acceleration are common to a large number of spacecraft components and other devices. Testing such devices has normally been a two-step process in which independent vibration and centrifuge tests are performed. There is a concern that the combined effects from these two dynamic environments could cause unexpected operational failures that were not predicted from either analysis or independent testing. This paper describes the design and performance of a testing facility that combines vibration and centrifuge testing in a single operation. The test facility is called the Vibrafuge and utilizes Sandia National Laboratories' (SNL) 29-ft underground centrifuge with an attached electrodynamic shaker. Also addressed are activities underway at SNL on development of a combined vibration and acoustic test facility (ATF).

Sandia National Laboratories' new high level acoustic test facility

Rogers, Jonathan D.

A high intensity acoustic test facility has been designed and is under construction at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. The chamber is designed to provide an acoustic environment of 154dB (re 20 {mu}Pa) overall sound pressure level over the bandwidth of 50 Hz to 10,000 Hz. The chamber has a volume of 16,000 cubic feet with interior dimensions of 21.6 ft {times} 24.6 ft {times} 30 ft. The construction of the chamber should be complete by the summer of 1990. This paper discusses the design goals and constraints of the facility. The construction characteristics are discussed in detail, as are the acoustic performance design characteristics. The authors hope that this work will help others in designing acoustic chambers. 12 refs., 6 figs.
