About Robotics

Camhand Robotic arm

With more than 25 years of experience and hundreds of successful projects in the research, design, development, and delivery of complex micro- to macro-sized automated systems, Sandia’s High Consequence, Automation, & Robotics (HCAR) group is a world leader in responding to high-consequence challenges that impact national security.

Our capabilities and expertise in advanced controls, unique mobility, perception, cybernetics, advanced manipulation, high-consequence automation, and fail-safe design and integration enable us to design, develop, and implement robotic and non-robotic automation solutions that our customers can trust to handle challenging high-consequence tasks and missions.

By leveraging Sandia’s capabilities in miniaturization of electronics and components, as well as advances in material sciences and power sources, we’re able to create innovative systems that are transforming areas such as medicine, surveillance and reconnaissance, autonomous exploration and detection, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) disablement, and accident response.

Our Mission

To provide our customers with cutting-edge technology systems that can safely and securely perform the high-consequence tasks and missions they need to in order to support our nation’s security.

Our Vision

To lead innovation in robotic and non-robotic automation intelligent solutions for our nation’s security.

History

HCAR has been developing high-consequence automation solutions for more than 25 years. Paving the way for advancements in controls, perception, mobility, and manipulation, HCAR has made significant contributions to the field of robotics. Recently the Smithsonian came to HCAR looking for robots of historical significance and we provided nine for their permanent collection at the National Museum of American History. Our People and Culture

We have a large team of engineers and scientists working at HCAR who focus as closely on graceful degradation as they do in ensuring our technologies perform successfully. Our staff is dedicated to delivering unique solutions that solve challenging problems. We specialize in finding solutions to high-consequence issues before they become problems. In addition, we strive to look 10 to 15 years ahead of the technology curve and find solutions not only to high-consequence national security problems we face today but solutions to such problems we may face in the future. At HCAR, high-consequence is not just a mission; it is a part of our every effort.
