More than a dozen Sandia/California employees and their friends and families helped fight food insecurities throughout the Bay Area with the Alameda County Community Food Bank at the second quarter Sandia Serves Saturday event in February.
Dozens of middle school girls from the Techbridge Girls program in Oakland visited Sandia’s California campus on March 4 during STEM Day for Girls. The girls were welcomed by Energy and Homeland Security Program Management Director Marcey Hoover.
Sandia employees were given 15 days, but it only took an hour and a half on April 1 to raise $15,000, the amount the Labs pledged to match from its corporate contribution program for a donation to the Roadrunner Food Bank in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Community Involvement team upped the match to $25,000 that afternoon.

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network reports that there are currently 95,000 people on the national kidney waiting list. In 2019, Sandia data engineer Lawrence Allen became one of 355 living, anonymous donors who made that list move, joining a total of just 2,770 donors to date.

Hundreds of cybersecurity professionals and college students gathered around the country Nov. 16 for a day of cyber wargames. The event, DOE’s roughly annual CyberForce Competition, was created to teach and inspire the next generation of cybersecurity professionals by giving them an opportunity to apply their skills against realistic problems. In its second year as host, Sandia worked with 10 teams in this year's event.
Sandia scientists Blythe Clark and Karen Devine were honored at the 2019 Society of Women Engineers awards ceremony in Anaheim, California. The annual event recognizes “the successes of individuals who enhance the engineering profession and advocate for women in engineering through contributions to industry, education and the community.”
