Overview

Environmental Test and Engineering Sciences Training (ETEST) is a year-round internship program. Students onboard remotely in December and prepare for a 10-12 week onsite summer experience. Students will help support experimental platforms and diagnostics to obtain accurate and reproducible data in mission relevant normal and abnormal mechanical environments. This is achieved through environmental and nondestructive testing of components and systems for design, development, qualification, and simulation model validation. Students will integrate into the environmental testing complex, which focuses on several engineering disciplines including:

  • Experimental structural dynamics
  • Shock and vibration testing
  • Experimental solid mechanics
  • Experimental impact mechanics and
  • Nondestructive evaluation

The environmental testing complex tackles problems for groups across Sandia and elsewhere. ETEST interns will be exposed to hands-on work with state-of-the-art lab equipment, collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, and a wide variety of applications.

What You Gain

There are several benefits for student interns:

  • A series of fifteen seminars (synchronous or asynchronous) is planned throughout the Spring semester, allowing students a flexible schedule while learning background information on Sandia as a whole, environmental testing, signal processing, and nondestructive evaluation.  During the school year, time commitment is low but impactful, as we hope this gives students a deeper understanding of the role our group serves within Sandia.
  • Each student is individually paired with a staff mentor to help support their progress throughout the internship. This mentor is familiar with the student’s focused R&D project, which is also matched to the student’s background and strengths.
  • ETEST encourages publication of novel results and can help to support conference travel and paper writing.
  • Several on-site tours and activities are planned throughout the summer
  • While mentors meet with student interns frequently, regular meetings with ETEST program coordinators also help to ensure a happy and successful internship.

Project Types

Projects change year-to-year based on mission needs and students’ pre-existing skills. Some examples of past and current projects are below:

  • Circuit board failure analysis using single & multi-axis shaker
  • Effect of approximate boundary conditions on experimental dynamic characterization of structures
  • Iterative algorithms for computed tomography reconstruction
  • Material and dynamic characterization of a jointed system
  • Nonlinear characterization and modeling of resonant plates
  • Resonant ultrasound for speed of sound characterization
