Interns making real impact

Overview

The Stockpile Systems Mission Center provides systems leadership for the ongoing stewardship of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and ensures a safe, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent by adhering to the “Always/Never” imperative – that when authorized, nuclear weapons will function with very high reliability and will never function under any other conditions.

Stockpile Systems projects focus on extended refurbishment and re-evaluation of component efficiencies in various weapons and weapon subsystems, to include analysis of performance data captured through a variety of tests. Every component, including circuits and wires, goes through rigorous testing and simulation modeling to ensure its reliability and efficiency in Stockpile Systems’ efforts.

Stockpile Systems interns are part of a Sandia program, MissionTech, which offers students valuable cross-exposure to projects in ND Mission Technologies mission centers.

What You Gain

  • Experience with high-rigor qualification and validation activities
  • Extended knowledge of high-reliability component characterization and surety
  • Risk identification and mitigation skills
  • A professional network of fellow interns from around the nation through fun events and activities

All Sandia internships are made possible by a stipend and serve as a direct pipeline to full-time employment at the Labs. Sandia Internships also offer a variety of benefits, from flexible work schedules to health and wellness, to co-op opportunities. Interns work as integrated members of their teams alongside experienced mentors to produce project deliverables, and past interns have published research papers alongside their Sandia teams.

Project Types

  • Component modeling and simulation
  • System engineering design and qualification
  • Non-nuclear subsystem and components integration
  • Refurbishment and re-evaluation of component efficiencies
  • Test data acquisition, analysis, and exploitation
