Interns making real impact

Overview

The Component Science, Engineering, and Production (CSEP) Mission Center is responsible for the research, design, qualification, production, and surveillance of over 100 products across four product lines: power sources, explosives, neutron generators, and integrated surety production.

CSEP teams and interns work hands-on in our laboratories to design and develop components for neutron generators, process and formulate energetic material-based solutions for applications of explosive phenomenology, and implement the latest engineering technologies to advance power source research and development. The four product lines of this Mission Center crosscuts Sandia and serves the Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Mission.

Component Science, Engineering, and Production interns are part of a Sandia program, MissionTech, which offers students valuable cross-exposure to projects in ND Mission Technologies mission centers.

What You Gain

  • Digital and/or analog design experience
  • Hardware engineering and development experience
  • Hands-on experience through full scale component production
  • A professional network of fellow interns from around the nation through fun events and activities

All Sandia internships are made possible by a stipend and serve as a direct pipeline to full-time employment at the Labs. Sandia Internships also offer a variety of benefits, from flexible work schedules to health and wellness, to co-op opportunities. Interns work as integrated members of their teams alongside experienced mentors to produce project deliverables, and past interns have published research papers alongside their Sandia teams.

Project Types

  • Design and develop components for neutron generators
  • Research, design, and test power sources
  • Materials research and qualification for use with energetic components
  • Characterizing electronics power consumption for a variety of operational configurations
