Sandia named one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity
Forbes Media has recognized Sandia as one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity in 2019. Sandia is the only national lab on the list of 500 companies and research labs. The honor is based an independent survey of employees at companies with more than 1,000 employees across all industry sectors.
Three Sandia Labs researchers earn national honors in leadership and technology
Three Sandia researchers were honored for their leadership and technical achievements at the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year STEM Global Competitiveness Conference. Warren Davis, Quincy Johnson and Olivia Underwood received their awards during the conference in Washington, D.C. The annual meeting recognizes black scientists and engineers and is a program of the national Career Communications Group, which advocates for corporate diversity.
Middle school teams design cities of the future
Students from 18 rural and urban middle schools took part in the sixth annual New Mexico Future City Competition regional finals at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning. The students vied for the chance to represent New Mexico at the national Future City Competition in Washington, DC, in February.
Celebration at the intellectual property finish line includes family and friends
Sandia researchers were joined by partners, parents and friends in December to celebrate the ninth annual Innovation Celebration, organized by Integrated Partnerships Organizations. The event, at the Albuquerque Museum, recognized individuals who added patents and commercial copyrights to Sandia’s intellectual property portfolio in 2017.
New computing center opens for business – ASTRA supercomputing business, that is
On Nov. 28, Sandia held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the newly built facility to house its Astra supercomputer. The LEED gold-certified building features a 30-foot-high ceiling and is long and wide enough to house a basketball game and a crowd of spectators.
Sandia researchers win five R&D 100 awards
Sandia inventions and co-inventions have captured five R&D 100 Awards for 2018. Competitors for the awards include an international pool of universities, corporations and government labs, and the sole criterion for winning is “demonstrable technological significance compared with competing products and technologies.” Since 1976, Sandia has earned a total of 124 awards. Society of Women Engineers presents Achievement Award to Jackie Chen
Sandia scientist Jackie Chen was presented with an Achievement Award at WE18, the annual conference of the Society of Women Engineers, in Minneapolis. Jackie received the award for her impact on society and the engineering community.
Larry Luna elected American Society of Mechanical Engineers fellow
Sandia engineer Larry Luna has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for significant achievements during more than 30 years of service and leadership. ASME fellows constitute about 3.5 percent of the organization’s more than 95,000 members. Larry was specifically recognized “for his contributions to the national security of the United States,” according to ASME.
2018 HENAAC Luminary Mark Rodriguez
Sandia materials scientist Mark Rodriguez has been presented with the Luminary Award at this year's Great Minds in STEM Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference. Luminary honorees are professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics who initiate, collaborate and lead key programs and research and make significant contributions to the Hispanic technical community as leaders and role models.
Kenneth Armijo wins UNM Zia award
Sandia mechanical engineer Kenneth Armijo, who leads bilingual family science events by night and researches solar energy and assists small businesses by day, received the prestigious Zia Award from his alma mater, the University of New Mexico.
