DOE visit highlights Sandia energy work with Indian groups
Sandia recently hosted visitors from the DOE Indian Country Energy and Infrastructure Working Group. During the visit, ICEIWG members, DOE officials and intergovernmental and contracted partners learned about Sandia’s unique role in energy research.
Predicting disease with big data
The monthly Bay Area Strategic Engagement Seminars (BASES) series in California has been, by all accounts, a home run. The series gives staff a chance to learn from leaders in key Sandia-related fields, and most recently brought Stanford University Genetics Chair Michael Snyder to campus.
International corrosion society elects first Sandia fellow
Sandia materials scientist David Enos has been elected as a fellow of NACE International, the chief professional society for corrosion engineering. The first Sandian to receive the honor, David was chosen for his significant contributions to corrosion science and engineering for protecting materials in complex environments.
DOE classifies Winalee Carter as ‘excellent’
In recognition of her exceptional service, Winalee Carter last month received the Department of Energy’s 2018 Classification Award of Excellence at the 53rd annual Classification Officers Technical Program Review meeting in Germantown, Maryland.
Five seconds at F/16, with a broken camera
In May 1998, Sandia photojournalist Randy Montoya captured a photo that has since become legend. The stunning image, nicknamed "Arcs and Sparks," captures the Z machine just as it fires — a mere 100 nanoseconds of roughly 200 trillion watts of x-ray energy, many times all the electrical power generated in the world at any given moment.
Catching Dreams
Sandia volunteers traveled to Gallup, New Mexico in April to bring hands-on science and engineering activities — like a Lego robotics class — to more than 60 middle and high school students. The activities were part of Sandia’s Dream Catchers Science Program at the University of New Mexico-Gallup campus.
Shadid named SIAM fellow
Sandia computational scientist and mathematician John Shadid has been named a 2018 Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, based upon his research on solution methods for multiphysics systems, scalable parallel numerical algorithms and numerical methods for strongly coupled nonlinear partial differential equations.
Kids Day at Sandia
Sandia/New Mexico hosted more than 1,800 students across the Labs on April 26 for a combined celebration of Kids Day (formerly Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day) and Earth Day.
Sandia scores Innovation award
When it comes to promoting entrepreneurship and innovative technologies, Sandia stands out. That’s according to the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group, which has honored the Labs with its prestigious 2018 Founders Award.
Labs’ video producer wins silver in international film competition
Brent Peterson accepted a silver medal for his 2017 ethics films at the New York Festivals International TV and Film Awards ceremony on April 10. Entries from more than 40 countries were submitted to the competition.
