The alliance for computing at the extreme scale

Ang, James A.; Doerfler, Douglas W.; Dosanjh, Sudip S.; Hemmert, Karl S.

Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories have formed a new high performance computing center, the Alliance for Computing at the Extreme Scale (ACES). The two labs will jointly architect, develop, procure and operate capability systems for DOE's Advanced Simulation and Computing Program. This presentation will discuss a petascale production capability system, Cielo, that will be deployed in late 2010, and a new partnership with Cray on advanced interconnect technologies.

Supercomputer and cluster performance modeling and analysis efforts:2004-2006

Ang, James A.; Vaughan, Courtenay T.; Barnette, Daniel W.; Benner, Robert E.; Doerfler, Douglas W.; Ganti, Anand; Phelps, Sue C.; Rajan, Mahesh; Stevenson, Joel O.; Scott, Ryan T.

This report describes efforts by the Performance Modeling and Analysis Team to investigate performance characteristics of Sandia's engineering and scientific applications on the ASC capability and advanced architecture supercomputers, and Sandia's capacity Linux clusters. Efforts to model various aspects of these computers are also discussed. The goals of these efforts are to quantify and compare Sandia's supercomputer and cluster performance characteristics; to reveal strengths and weaknesses in such systems; and to predict performance characteristics of, and provide guidelines for, future acquisitions and follow-on systems. Described herein are the results obtained from running benchmarks and applications to extract performance characteristics and comparisons, as well as modeling efforts, obtained during the time period 2004-2006. The format of the report, with hypertext links to numerous additional documents, purposefully minimizes the document size needed to disseminate the extensive results from our research.

Evaluation of Whipple bumper shields at 7 and 10 km/s

AIAA Space Programs and Technologies Conference, 1992

Ang, James A.

A series of experiments has been performed on the Sandia Hypervelocity Launcher to determine the performance limits of conventional Whipple shields against representative 0.8 g aluminum orbital debris plate-like fragments with velocities of 7 and 10 km/s. Supporting diagnostics include flash X-rays, high speed photography and transient digitizers for timing correlation. Two Whipple shield designs were tested with either a 0.030 cm or a 0.127 cm thick front sheet and a 0.407 cm thick backsheet separated by 30.5 cm. These two designs bracket the ballistic penetration limit curve for protection against these debris simulants for 7 km/s impacts.

Hypervelocity Impact Jet Formation [Book Chapter]

Shock Compression of Condensed Matter–1991

Ang, James A.

The hypervelocity impact of a particle on a surface generates a jet of shocked material which is thrown from the impact site. A simple analytic model has been developed to obtain expressions for the evolution of this jet of ejecta. The analysis is based on applying the conservation equations of mass and momentum to the problem of a normal impact of a sphere against a semi-infinite flat target. Expressions are developed for the evolution of the jet velocity, jet release point and the locus of points which describe the ejecta envelope. These analytical ejecta profiles are compared with high speed photographs of impact jet formation.
