Sandia California celebrates 70 years of vital contributions to national security

Nestled along the eastern edge of the Bay Area within the Livermore Valley lies Sandia California. Sandia opened this second principal site in 1956 with a small group of employees that has grown to serve as home base for more than 2,000 workforce members including employees, contractors, postdoctoral fellows and student interns.
This year, Sandia California celebrates seven decades of vital contributions to Sandia’s missions and active engagement with the surrounding communities.
Festivities highlight Sandia’s bond with the community
Key celebrations included entering a float for the 108th annual Livermore Rodeo Parade and sponsoring the “World’s Fastest Rodeo” at Robertson Park on June 13.
Several Sandians created a festive, western-themed float reflecting Sandia and Livermore’s traditions and culture. Sandia’s iconic symbol — the Thunderbird — made its parade debut, greeting attendees.
On June 25, the Health, Benefits and Employee Services team organized a Wellness Fair promoting health and well-being through activities and contests that featured a “Then and Now” theme reminiscent of the 1950s when Sandia California opened. The festivities included a 1950s costume contest and Sandia trivia competition.
Honoring history
The spirited events gave workforce members a chance to reflect on Sandia’s rich history in California and proudly embrace what it means to be a Sandian.
