An increasing issue in the energy sector is the difficulty identifying and fixing weakness in critical infrastructure due to the growing complexity and connectedness of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Traditionally, the process of identifying these weaknesses tend to look at individual parts, which is becoming less relevant and effective as technology advances. Threats to our cyber systems are also posing significant concern, prompting attention to its security.
To address these issues, researchers are looking for innovative ways to analyze system components and quickly gather information about how these systems operate. They want to combine data from both information technology and operational technology to better understand and protect energy and critical infrastructure systems. This includes improving secure data sharing between cybersecurity tools and power system analytics, as well as using advanced techniques like machine learning to enhance the overall security and resilience of both old and new power systems.
Project Highlights
Developing advanced Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) for power systems with high renewable penetration, integrating wide-area measurements to enhance system stability while mitigating cybersecurity threats.
Integrating several existing Sandia-developed tools for parameter space exploration, cyber resilience metrics calculation, and cyber-physical system emulation in order to enable more rigorous, repeatable, and statistics-driven cyber experimentation.
A cyber-physical security, orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) capability, FACETS, ingests both cyber and physical (physics-based) data and prioritizes cyber-physical situational awareness (CPSA).
