Managed by Sandia’s Government Relations team, the Sandia Washington, D.C. office is a vital resource and supporting facility for Sandia visitors, the NNSA laboratories and associated government agencies in the Washington, D.C. area.

The office is located in L’Enfant Plaza, which is a 5-minute walk to the U.S. Department of Energy Headquarters’ Forrestal Building. The office boasts classified and unclassified conference spaces, as well as offices of convenience that can be reserved whenever you need to work or have meetings in D.C.

The office staff includes protocol, IT and security personnel who are a resource while working in the Washington, D.C. office.

Planning your visit

To reserve a room, contact Jessica Baxter, and then complete the Meeting Request Form and return to jlbaxte@sandia.gov.

You will need to store personal electronic devices, including your phone and other WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices, upon entry. Lockers are available to secure your items.

Members of the workforce must wear their HSPD-12 badge issued by DOE or Sandia site-specific badges while visiting the facility. Those without a DOE-issued HSPD-12 badge can be granted access by contacting security officer Teresa Miller at 202-314-3033 or tgmille@sandia.gov.

Sandia is a smoke-free and drug-free workplace. Smoking is prohibited on all Sandia-managed property, inside and outside of buildings.

Airports

Reagan National Airport (DCA)

DCA is the closest airport to the Washington D.C. metro area and the Sandia Washington D.C. office.

Ground Transportation
  • The Metro Rail System is the most convenient way to get to and from DCA.
  • Rental car counters are located on the first floor in Parking Garage A.
  • Ride share:
    • For Terminal A, customers can meet their ride on the third (outer) curb.
    • For Terminal B/C, customers can meet their ride on the Baggage Claim (Arrivals) Level -1st Floor on the outer curb.

Dulles International Airport (IAD)

IAD is 29 miles from the office and during rush hour can take a significant amount of time to get to and from the Washington D.C. metro area.

Ground Transportation
  • The Metrobus Route 5A is the most convenient and cheapest way to get to and from IAD. Metrobus Route 5A operates as an express bus service between Dulles Airport and Washington, D.C. (L’Enfant Plaza).
  • Washington Flyer Taxicabs serve Washington IAD exclusively with 24-hour service to and from the airport. When leaving the airport, no reservations are necessary. Simply follow the signs for Ground Transportation or Taxi to the lower level of the main terminal where a customer service representative will be available 24 hours a day.   • Ride share:
    • The new curb is located on the ground level outside of Baggage Claim, accessible via Doors 2, 4 or 6.

Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI)

BWI is 35 miles from the office and during rush hour can take a significant amount of time to get to and from the Washington D.C. metro area.

Ground Transportation
  • The MARC commuter train (Penn Line) is the most convenient way to get between BWI and Washington D.C.’s Union Station (located at Massachusetts Ave. and First Street, NE).
  • Additional transportation options can be found on the BWI website.
  • Ride share:
    • App-based ride services pick up and drop off passengers at the terminal curbs on the Upper Level/Departures.

Education

Sandia’s Washington D.C. Office is within easy commuting distance of neighborhoods in the D.C. metropolitan area and nearby communities. Residents have a broad choice of housing — from apartments in the city’s center to more spacious homes in Maryland or Virginia just minutes from hiking and biking trails.

Recreation

In addition to natural beauty, D.C. is home to world class art, music, sports and more. The Smithsonian Institution – the world’s largest museum, education and research complex – consists of 17 museums and galleries, including the National Zoo. D.C. has numerous theatres like Ford’s Theatre, Arena Stage and Folger Theatre. It’s also home to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which presents over 2,200 performing arts shows and events each year. And don’t miss out on seeing a Washington Nationals game at Nationals Park. They won the world series in 2019!

And then there’s the national mall. You haven’t seen D.C. without visiting the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and the list goes on. When you’ve seen the sights and had a refresher on history, pick a place just outside the city to get in touch with nature. Rock Creek Park is a national park just three miles north of the city with hiking, bike trails and more. Or choose an afternoon in Virginia hiking at the Potomac Overlook Regional Park.
