We leverage Sandia’s expertise in material science, microsystems, and advanced modeling and simulation to design and develop advanced cybernetic technologies for a variety of applications. Cybernetics includes the development of mechanical, physical, biological, and cognitive systems that enable the development of advanced man-machine interface technologies. Our work in this area has led to the development of dynamic prosthetics technology, implantable sensors with neural interfaces, and modular integrated microsystems.

Sandia is developing a dynamic prosthetic socket system that monitors and adjusts to volume changes in an amputee’s residual limb.

We’re working toward the development of advanced neural interface technology to improve an amputee’s control over their prosthetic with direct help from their own nervous system, much the same way they control their other limbs. This technology can greatly improve the quality of life for amputees.

Sandia has developed multiple (patent pending) tactile sensors that offer unique performance. We’ve designed a bubble pressure sensor that has performed better than other tactile sensors in areas such as hysteresis and drift and a three-axis optical sensor that can measure both normal and shear (in two directions).
