MAVERIC South features relevant, realistic infrastructure, equipment, and material approaches for radiological source characterization, monitoring of items in deployed storage, portal monitoring, radiological sensing, and perimeter surveillance measures. The nature of the overall test bed makes it an ideal tool for evaluating concepts of operations, executing training, or conducting exercises.
Facilities
Spanning 142,000 square feet, MAVERIC South includes two high-bay facilities and several support buildings, with roadways and parking areas that can accommodate vehicle and pedestrian traffic for portal monitoring test and evaluation. Should the mission require, MAVERIC South can be reconfigured and reclassified as a limited area.
MAVERIC South hosts both the Mission Equipment Radiological Decontamination Laboratory (MERDL) and the Mission Equipment Readiness Facility (MERF). MERDL’s mission is to ensure equipment employed by NNSA’s Nuclear Material Verification (NMV) program stays operational without jeopardizing the health and safety of the professionals who employ it. MERF provides storage, calibration, and maintenance of NMV Health & Safety Team equipment in a mission-ready state for NMV events and deployments.
Key Operational Environments
The above-ground compound at MAVERIC South contains a radiological Material Balance Area and logistical and laboratory structures relevant to operational use cases, including the following:
- Deployed storage
- Central storage and staging
- Assembly and disassembly/dismantlement
- Maintenance or remanufacturing
- Material control and accounting
- Retired stockpile storage
- Disposition
- Traffic portal monitoring
- Handling and transport
- Radiation characterization and decontamination

High bay/traffic inspection area.

Storage for radiological test sources.

Specialized Tools, Equipment, and Materials
- Radiological Test Sources: MAVERIC South includes an operational Material Balance Area that stores a robust radiological test source materials library for use across the test bed.
- Radiological Test and Inspection Equipment: Handheld X-ray radiography is the principal means for inspecting equipment and items of interest.
- Test Bed Options: Shielding materials and mock high explosives provide test bed users more options for radiation transport testing and mock high explosive material assemblies with varying thicknesses are available for test use.
