Sandia engineer William Moffatt has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his accomplishments at Sandia and volunteer work outside the Labs.
The award recognizes contributions of engineers to the profession and society. Engineers in the defense sector may have few opportunities to share their accomplishments with the broader engineering community.
“I will strive to identify and nominate others as ASME Fellows from this somewhat invisible community,” William said.
ASME recognized William for his expertise in nuclear safety and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, as well as educating NNSA teams to adhere to ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standard in design, production, qualification and assessment. Additionally, ASME applauded his work with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying as it transitioned the mechanical engineering professional engineer exam to computer-based testing.
Since joining Sandia in 1993, William has held many technical and leadership roles in materials science and engineering, surveillance assessment, nuclear safety assessment and stockpile systems engineering. He was named a distinguished member of Sandia’s technical staff in 2022 and has been an effective mentor during his tenure, contributing to the success of staff at various levels of the organization.
William has also served in leadership and technical positions at the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for over two decades.
He has been a member of the ASME leadership community for many years and received an award from ASME New Mexico for six years of service as an Executive Committee member and professional development instructor.
ASME Fellows are selected for their achievements by the Committee of Past Presidents through a rigorous vetting process. The organization has more than 67,000 members worldwide, with Fellows representing less than 5% of the membership.
ASME plays a vital role in establishing and promulgating about 600 industry codes and standards. The society is dedicated to advancing engineering for the benefit of humanity.
