Biography

Patrick J. Griffin is a Laboratory Fellow at Sandia National Laboratories in the Advanced Science and Technology Division, Org. 1000. Over the past 44 years, he has been involved in radiation modeling, neutron effects testing, radiation dosimetry, and radiation damage to materials.

At Sandia, Patrick has served in several roles with activities including; Principle Investigator (PI) for the Grand Challenge (GC) Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project on New Capabilities for Hostile Environments at Z; liaison to USSTRATCOM/J8 where he served as Senior Technical Advisor to Global Strike Capabilities Division, J87; PI for several IAEA-sponsored international Cooperative Research Projects (CRPs); PI for the ASC Neutron-Gamma Energy Transport (NuGET) code; Deputy Science & Technology (S&T) lead for the Qualification Alternatives to SPR-III (QASPR) program; member Independent Verification and Validation Team for Pulsed Fast Neutron Analysis System at Ysleta Port of Entry; development of the Agent Defeat Empirical Lethality Models (ELM); and development of the energy-dependent form for the 1-MeV-equivalent damage for GaAs devices.

Patrick is active in the ANSI/ANS and ASTM standards communities, serving as Chairman of the ASTM E10.05 subcommittee on Neutron Metrology since 1994. Patrick has been actively involved in the radiation effects community. He has been the guest editor for the Journal of Radiation Effects Research and Engineering (JRERE) and has served as Member-at-Large, Executive Secretary, and Vice-Chair for the HEART Steering Committee.

Education

Dr. Griffin earned a B.S in physics from Ohio University in 1973, including minors in Mathematics and Chemistry.  He earned a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Ohio University in 1979 in the area of theoretical nuclear physics. His dissertation was titled “A Finite Range Study of Coupled Reaction Channel Processes”.
