Building on its long history of fielding high consequence systems, Sandia is using its world-class materials and computational science expertise to improve AM parts, processes, and materials.

Process

Ex-situ and in-situ diagnostics are being coupled with computational models at process, material, and part scales to enhance fundamental understanding, to quantify margins and uncertainties, and to assure product performance for critical applications. New process technologies are also being developed.

Materials

Extensive materials characterization is building a knowledge base to ensure that systems leveraging AM meet stringent reliability requirements for extreme environments. Novel materials for AM are also being explored to address limitations inherent in conventional materials.
