The goal of the new Percept software project is to enable predictive simulation by providing tools for code and solution verification. Percept is the open source replacement of a formerly proprietary Sandia project called Encore. As part of the development process of a numerical simulation code, Percept provides tools to verify the correctness of code by testing the order-of-convergence to an exact solution—measuring the rate with which the discretization error approaches zero as grid size and time step are reduced. In turn, as part of the analysis process, where a numerical code or coupled codes simulate an engineering problem, Percept helps manage the tradeoff of computer and human resources versus accuracy. Percept can ensure that the discretization error in the quantities of interest remain below a desired tolerance.
