Biography

Matthew M. Hopkins has been a technical staff member at Sandia for over 20 years. He is currently in the Applied Optical and Plasma Sciences organization. He has led multifunctional technical teams, developed models, and advanced the state of the art in computational science in low temperature plasma physics and complex, multiphase, multiphysics fluid dynamics. To a great extent, experimental and computational efforts are integrated to provide validation data and identification of important phenomena.

Current research interests are concentrated in the areas of vacuum and gaseous discharges, especially understanding coupled plasma-surface interaction in these environments, and plasma sheath/boundary dynamics. Past research areas include multiphase and multiphysics transport, laser ablation, fluid-based chemical, biological, and nuclear sensors, non-Newtonian flows (suspension rheology), stability analysis, error analysis, mathematical biology, and pattern formation.

He is a PI of Sandia’s Low-Temperature Plasma Research Facility (PRF), a founding organizer of the International Workshop on Mechanisms of Vacuum Arcs (MeVArc), a member of the Permanent International Scientific Committee for the International Symposium on Discharge and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum (ISDEIV), and a team member of LXCat, a volunteer community organization collecting and sharing fundamental plasma chemistry data for the low temperature plasma community. He has greatly enjoyed working with postdocs and students throughout his career.

  • Discharge physics: vacuum, low-pressure, atmospheric pressure, higher pressures, including surface (vacuum-insulator)
  • Surface coupling to plasmas: secondary yields from ion, electrons, photons
  • Electron and neutral surface emission (field, thermionic, etc.)
  • Verification and validation methods for plasma simulation, especially PIC-DSMC
