UL 9540 and UL 9540A

UL 9540 which includes management of UL 9540A will be holding a echnical Committee virtual meeting on Thursday, May 9, 2024.  It is in the process of updating safety testing requirements called out in NFPA 855 and referenced in the International Fire Code and NFPA 1.  Explosion control and explosion protection by deflagration venting are issues now being addressed by both fire codes, NFPA 855 and UL 9540.  UL 9540A is not a standard, but a defined method for testing BESS, primarily Li-Ion batteries to demonstrate that thermal runaway events – both fire and toxic gas releases – can be contained and not propagated to adjoining units. The advent of other technologies, e.g. flow batteries, zinc, sodium-ion and newer Li variations, make the updating of these two documents very important.  Access to information can be obtained at https://www.ul.com/resources/apps/myul-client-portal.
