Biography
Since March 2022, Jim has served as the Acting Director of Sandia’s Center for Computing Research. From 2017-2022, he served as the Senior Manager of the Computational Sciences and Math Group, and previously served as Manager of the Optimization and Uncertainty Quantification Department and the Advanced Computational Mechanics Architectures Department. Jim is Sandia’s lead for the DOE Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program, which includes programmatic responsibility for Sandia’s Exascale Computing Project (ECP). He also leads Sandia’s Advanced Technology Development and Mitigation (ATDM) subprogram, which is part of DOE’s Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program for stockpile stewardship. He has led major software development teams including the Dakota optimization and uncertainty quantification toolkit team, as well as the SIERRA computational mechanics framework team.
Education
Jim holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has previous experience at NASA Langley Research Center and joined Sandia after a short stint at Object Reservoir, Inc., a start-up company in Austin, TX focused on reservoir modeling. He has served on the Executive Council of the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) and chaired the USACM Technical Thrust Area on Uncertainty Quantification & Probabilistic Modeling from 2015-2020. Jim was named USACM Fellow in 2021.
