What is HMTech?

HMTech is an educational supplement that inspires young minds through engineering and scientific experiences. The program targets African American middle and high school students.

What is the history of HMTech?

In 1986, a group of African American employees started an after school program to inspire African American students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Ten years later the program became a summer program sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories. HMTech has been inspiring young minds for over 30 years!

Who sponsors the HMTech program?

The HMTech program is sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories Community Involvement and Black Leadership Committee.

Who may Participate?

Students who will be entering grades 6 through 12 are eligible to participate in the HMTech program.

My student is not African American, can my student still enroll into the program?

Absolutely! The HMTech program welcomes all students to come and participate in the program.

When and Where?

The HMTech Program will be held in person at Albuquerque High School on June 1, 8, 22, and 29.

How many classes can I sign up for?

There are 2 sessions. Students will sign up for one class each session.

Do I have to take all the classes?

Yes, you have to choose 2 classes to participate in the program.

What if I cannot make all the classes?

Attending all Saturdays is strongly encouraged, however, you can still enroll if you know you are going to miss Saturday.

How do I sign up?

Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Go to the Registration page to find out how to register. 

What materials will my student need to participate in the science program?

All we require is your student and his/her desire to learn about science and engineering. We provide your student with all necessary classroom materials (paper, pens, simple calculator, etc.) needed to be successful in the program.

Who are the program's instructors?

Various Sandia National Laboratories employees and community members volunteer to develop and teach hands-on classes for the HMTech program.

Is there a classroom limit?

Yes. As a general rule, we limit enrollments to a maximum of 25 students per class.

Should I bring a lunch for my student?

The program will provide lunch and snacks but if your student has allergies please provide them with a lunch each Saturday.

Can I volunteer for classes?

Yes, we are in need of teaching assistants, program volunteers, and photographers. If you are interested in volunteering complete the volunteer form.

Will there be a closing event?

Yes, every year we invite parents and friends to come to a closing event to see what the students have been working on this summer. For more information visit the showcase.
