Combining research, development, and demonstration to enable national energy security and use of subsurface resources
Sandia’s Fossil Energy and Carbon Management Program supports the Department of Energy’s initiatives to enhance U.S. energy security and critical mineral supplies and reduce emissions from fossil fuel production and use.
The program addresses complex technical challenges associated with surface and subsurface infrastructure, ensuring the safe exploration, recovery, transportation, and storage of fuels. Sandia develops advanced direct access and remote sensing tools to characterize and monitor both shallow and deep subsurface conditions. Sandia also serves as the primary science advisor to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and offers specialized expertise in hydrogen subsurface storage. Additionally, the program leads research and development for carbon removal, capture, and sequestration, as well as comprehensive monitoring of subsurface environments.
With exceptional capabilities in geomechanical testing, subsurface sensing, robotics, chemical separation, and exascale computing, the program’s research supports energy security while contributing to advancements in environmental safety, defense, intelligence, nuclear nonproliferation, disaster response, and climate security.
