Sandia Receives DOE Awards for Outstanding Work with Small Businesses

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Sandia National Laboratories two prestigious awards for its work with small and disadvantaged businesses: the Small Business Award for meeting or exceeding its subcontracting goals and for obtaining high rankings from the rating panel and the Special Performance Award for Sandia's success in awarding more than $16 million in contracts to women-owned and disadvantaged firms.

DOE Deputy Secretary T. J. Gauthier presented the awards at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. Representing Sandia at the Washington ceremonies were Frank Figueroa, VP Business Management and CFO; Leo Miranda, Small Business Program Manager; and Nora Armijo, Member of the Laboratory Staff in Supplier Relations/Supply Chain Management.

"I was thrilled to receive the award because it reflects the work that we are doing at Sandia and the partnerships we have with the business community in New Mexico," said Figueroa.

Of Sandia's fiscal year 1998 subcontracting budget of $560.9 million, 58.2% went to small businesses, 14.3% to disadvantaged businesses, 2.9% to the 8(a) pilot program, and 10% to women-owned businesses. More than 44% of Sandia's subcontracting budget went to New Mexico businesses.

In addition, Sandia participated in or sponsored a number of outreach activities, including the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Annual National Convention, the 51st Annual Southwest Purchasing Conference Trade Show, R’o Grande Minority Purchasing Council Matchmaker Breakfasts, the Governor's Business Advisory Council Economic Vitality Summit, Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce activities, Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce workshops, the Small Business Administration Procurement Conference, Construction and Roofing Seminars, and the Native American Trade Fair and Conference.
