What you need to know
You may reach certain career or personal milestones, or experience life events – like getting married – that require updates to your Sandia Human Resources records or that affect your Sandia benefits.
Qualifying Life Events
Certain life events, such as getting married, having a child, or getting divorced, can mean that your benefits coverage may need to change too.
These life events are called qualifying events that allow you to change your benefits during the year instead of having to wait for the annual open enrollment period.
You have 31 days from the date of the qualifying life event to change your benefits. These life events include:
- Getting married
- Getting divorced
- Adding or dropping a dependent
- Having your employment status or job classification change, affecting your benefits eligibility (for example, you move from part-time to full-time employment or vice versa)
- Having your spouse’s employment status change, affecting his or her benefits eligibility under that employer’s plan

Other Milestones and Life Events
You may have other milestones (such as changing your name or earning a degree) that require you to update your personal HR information with Sandia to keep it current:
- Verifying employment or salary history
- Changing your name
- Changing your address
- Earning a degree or experiencing a change in veteran status
- Reporting the death of an employee
There are some benefit changes that you can make at any time during the year:
- Update your savings and income plan contributions, elections, and beneficiaries
- Update your Health Savings Account contributions (limited to 1 time per month)
- Update your life insurance beneficiaries
- Discontinue Sandia Extras programs, if you’re enrolled
