ESTAP 2020-10-09 Nantucket Island Energy Storage: Batteries for Reducing Peak and Deferring Infrastructure Investment
This webinar teaches about Nantucket’s new battery energy storage system installed last summer. Prior to the installation of the battery system, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) analyzed the rate- and market-based case for investing in a battery system to meet peak loads. PNNL will discuss its evaluation method and the battery lifecycle benefits, including delaying the installation of a third cable out to the island. We will also hear from David Bianco at National Grid, who will cover the technical details of the project as well as discuss the storage system’s reliability aspects.

ESTAP 2020-07-30 Expanding Grid Capacity with Energy Storage in Decorah, Iowa
A new 2.5 MW battery storage project in Decorah, Iowa will boost the capacity of the local electric grid to allow for the addition of more rooftop solar in the community. The project is supported through funding from US DOE Office of Electricity and a state grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and is receiving technical support from Sandia National Laboratories. It is being developed by utility Alliant Energy.

Validation of safety is a necessity in the ever-changing grid energy storage landscape as it is needed to inspire consumer, regulator and insurer confidence. Accordingly, approaches to validate safety and prepare for unanticipated failures must be both developed and codified in the codes, standards, and regulations. To highlight these challenges DOE OE has released the “Energy Storage Safety Strategic Plan.” This document identifies three key challenge areas within the area of safety: validation techniques, incident preparedness, and safety documentation.
