DOE/OE Energy Storage Peer Review 2018



Register now for the 2018 Energy Storage Peer Review conference on September 25–27, 2018, at the Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sponsored by Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE), in conjunction with Sandia National Laboratories, this conference will explore energy storage activities supported by DOE/OE.


ESS Safety Working Group changes name to Energy Storage (ES) Safety Collaborative


Sandia National Laboratories and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are pleased to announce that the Energy Storage System (ESS) Working Group is changing its name to the Energy Storage (ES) Safety Collaborative.

We believe that this new name, and the new logo associated with this effort, more clearly represents our collective efforts while promoting a vision that invites and encourages all stakeholders to work together to identify and solve energy storage safety issues together.




Review Energy Storage Webinars on Resilience



It’s now possible to review the recordings and presentations from the first two webinars in a series sponsored by the DOE Energy Storage Program through Sandia National Laboratories, and facilitated by Strategen Consulting. These presentations examine applications, technologies, and deployment of energy storage to enhance grid resilience. The next webinar, Energy Storage as a Wholesale Market Participant: Rules, Barriers and Opportunities, will be held Thursday, June 14, 2018, at 11:00 am Pacific/2:00 pm Eastern.


Control System for Active Damping of Inter-Area Oscillations Wins 2017 R&D 100 Award



Today, electric power grids operate well below transmission capacity to avoid widespread outages due to inter-area oscillations. This new control system, funded by DOE OE and Bonneville Power Administration and developed by Sandia National Laboratories and Montana Tech, improves electric power grid reliability by continuously damping inter-area oscillations, allowing greater power transfer. This control system is the first successful grid demonstration of feedback control, making it a game changer in efforts to transform the existing grid into the future smart grid.

EPB Energizes Flow Battery in Support of National Grid Modernization Efforts


EPB has energized a 100kW/400kWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery as part of a national research effort to explore the best use of cutting edge technologies that could be implemented across the United States to modernize the power grid. EPB’s project constitutes a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The battery system for the project is provided by UniEnergy Technologies (UET), a U.S. manufacturer.

Energy Storage Database


The DOE Global Energy Storage Database is the go-to source for unbiased, accurate, and up-to-date information on energy-storage projects and policies. The database is publicly accessible and simple to use, providing an open-access resource for detailed energy-storage project and policy information, and allowing users to contribute data through a third-party vetting process.





The ESS Mission

The goal of the ESS program is to develop advanced energy storage technologies and systems, in collaboration with industry, academia, and government institutions that will increase the reliability, performance, and competitiveness of electricity generation and transmission in the electric grid and in standalone systems.
