Supercomputing Software: Research Directions and Practical Impediments
Marc Snir, Head of CS, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA

A variety of recent reports on supercomputing have emphasized the need for investments in software, in order to ease the use of supercomputers. The DARPA HPCS program has emphasized the need for increased productivity in HPC and is funding work on three new programming languages for HPC: Chapel, Fortress and X10.

The talk will present a personal view of these efforts and of the impediments toward greater productivity in HPC.
