Lead Bank Replaces Aging Bricks with Coated Bricks

July 8, 2013

Sandia National Laboratories’ Lead Bank, operated by the Materials Sustainability & Pollution Prevention (MSP2) group since FY11, makes clean excess lead available for reuse within Sandia.  To reduce Sandia’s impact on worker health and the environment, in FY13, the Lead Bank shipped a load of clean scrap lead for recycle, in exchange for new lead bricks with an epoxy-coated paint.  This coating will prevent oxidation and release of the lead.  One thousand coated bricks were received and are being distributed to users in exchange for uncoated bricks.
