Background

Over the last few years, our ability to drive matter to unprecedented pressure / temperature states has produced significant new insights across many fields, including material science, planetary science, astrophysics, fusion science, radiation science, and plasma physics. Sandia’s Z facility is the premier facility in the world in the area of pulsed-power science and has unique capabilities to deliver high-precision data at extreme conditions. The Z facility is available to the academic community for fundamental science experiments and a first call for proposals was issued in 2010. Following the call was a review process and six projects were awarded experimental time – together they constitute the fundamental science program on Z. Close interactions with the international research community are crucial for continued success and improvements of the fundamental science program. The workshop is the sixth of a series of yearly workshops held on the topic of fundamental science in extreme environments.

Workshop Objectives

The 6th Fundamental Science with Pulsed Power: Research Opportunities and User Meeting will be held Sunday, July 19 (evening) through Wednesday, July 22 (all day). The Research Opportunities component of the workshop will this year focus on providing an opportunity for current and prospective future collaborators to discuss and prepare responses to the Call for Proposals (see below). Presentations by Sandia scientists will provide relevant information concerning facility capabilities, including experimental platforms, targets, and diagnostics.  The User meeting component is for collaborative users to hear about the Z accelerator facility status and plans, and to present the status of their research.  Current collaborative research areas are Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Materials Science, and Magnetized High Energy Density (HED) Science that is relevant to Magnetized Inertial Fusion (MagLIF).

  • Identify key scientific development/direction enabled by ZFSP to date.  Focus more about direction, capabilities, momentum, and new scope.
  • Future direction for the ZFSP and Z.
    1. New reserach directions/ideas, within existing fields - and suggestions for new topics/fields.
    2. Formation of new or extended collaborative teams.
    3. How can the ZFSP program best support the collaborative teams?
    4. Improvements on Z in terms of diagnostics or infrastructure that would be beneficial for the collaborative teams.

Call for Proposals

We are preparing a Call for Proposals for experimental time on the Z facility.  We are planning for 30 dedicated Z shots to be allocated over 2 years, with first shots expected in the late spring or early summer of calendar year 2016.  Download Call for Proposals for ZFSP - CY16 and CY17.

The timeline is currently:

  • June 15, 2015: call for proposals is published
  • September 15, 2015: call for proposals is closed
  • October 2015: Facility review of proposals for compatibility with Z capabilities is completed
  • November 2015: Peer-review of proposals is completed
  • December 2015: awards are published

As for the previous call in 2010, prospective PI’s will work with scientists at Sandia and the Z-machine to develop proposals. Performing experiments on Z is an involved process and it is our experience is that a close collaboration between academic PI’s and Sandia scientists leads to excellent results.

An award of time on Z will include time for Z staff to support design and diagnostics of the experiments as well as fabrication of most targets.  Both new and current awardees are encouraged to apply for experimental time.  Awardees are expected to provide their own funding for their time.
