The Arsenic Water Technology Partnership organized three activities at the 2004 New Mexico Environmental Health Conference, related to implementation of the new standard for arsenic in drinking water.
The morning session (Tuesday, October 19th, 8:00 am - 11:30 am) focused on the status of efforts in New Mexico and other parts of the country to comply with the new MCL for arsenic removal by the regulatory deadline of January 23, 2006. Invited papers described results of recent epidemiology studies in the United States, regulatory implementation plans, pilot-scale studies of innovative technologies, and research by universities, national laboratories, and federal agencies to develop new approaches to water treatment.
During the afternoon session (Tuesday, October 19th, 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm) commercial developers/vendors of innovative treatment technologies for arsenic removal describe history of projects that demonstrated the effectiveness of these products.
In a closed session on October 20th, these same technologies were evaluated by independent technical experts for possible use in pilot demonstration to be conducted by Sandia National Laboratories at three community sites in 2005.
