| Summary of Arsenic Treatment Technology Theme Session and Vendor's Forum |
| The 2003 New Mexico Environmental Health Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico hosted two activities related to implementation of the new standard for arsenic in drinking water. On October 21, approximately 60 people attended a standing-room only technical theme session on technology demonstration programs designed to develop and verify cost effective methods to remove arsenic from drinking water sources. Descriptions of the Arsenic Water Technology Partnership and the US EPA Arsenic Treatment Technology Research Demonstration Program were given by program managers. These programmatic overviews were followed by technical presentations describing arsenic treatment processes, criteria for pilot tests and the characterization of residuals from arsenic removal technologies. |
| The theme session was followed by a day-long Vendors Forum on October 22. The purpose of the Forum was to preview technologies for possible use in pilot demonstrations to be conducted at three community sites in 2004. This workshop included a morning session attended by approximately 40 people at which 10 vendors of innovative treatment technologies gave 15-minute talks. These presentations described the vendor's arsenic removal technologies and project histories that demonstrate the effectiveness of their products. |

The afternoon session consisted of 30-minute interviews of each vendor by two technical evaluation teams. The teams used a standardized form to score the vendors on a variety of performance, cost and implementability metrics as well as "innovation." A description of the evaluation criteria was made available to the vendors prior to the Forum on the project website. The scores were entered into an Excel spreadsheet and the companies were ranked using the scores and a default set of weighting parameters. Alternate weighting schemes were discussed during a working dinner after the conclusion of the Forum. The companies were also ranked by the Technical Evaluation Teams using a qualitative criterion: "What are your top 3 choices?"
The result of this evaluation is one source of information for selection of technologies that will be piloted in CY 2004. Several additional companies have indicated interest in the pilot program and will be evaluated before final selections are made. In addition, other criteria may be added to those included in this evaluation after discussion with the Partnership Technical Review Committee (TRC) and Project Management Committee (PMC). Final selection of technologies for the 2004 field season will be made in early 2004. |
