Forces Present in
the Passenger Cruise Ship and Cargo Ship Collision

This ship-to-ship collision was typical of most of these types of collisions in that it took place near shore. On the continental shelf the water depth is less than 200 meters. Spent fuel casks that are used for international shipments must be able to withstand an immersion depth of 200 meters. Other requirements of the cask design generally result in casks that can withstand much deeper immersion depths.

CONCLUSION:
If a spent fuel cask were submerged in water depths up to 200 meters, it is certain that the cask would NOT release any radioactive material.
