Sandia's High Shock Penetrator Instrumentation Program

We build and field instrumentation for earth penetrators for both DOE and DoD programs. These are memory-based recording systems that take shock and other environmental data while seeing shock loads of over 20,000 gs for several milliseconds. The target media for these penetrators vary from rock to concrete to ice to soil.

The instrumentation is based on a multi-channel, memory-based recording system that records the event data during the penetration event for readout after the penetrator is recovered.

Packaging of the instrumentation for survival in a high shock environment is the key to recovering data.

Over the last 30 years, we have fielded instrumentation systems on an average of 25 penetration tests per year.
