-- Frequently Asked Questions --

Presentations
Q. Is there a template for the PowerPoint presentations?
A. Yes. It can be used for presenting from the PowerWall or for self-running presentations.

Q. May I bring my presentation with me to SC?
A. Yes. Just make sure you've had the presentation approved for unlimited distribution. Since all presentations will be transferred to one of our PCs, it would help if you burned it to a CD and gave it to us well before your presentation time slot.

Q. Is there a schedule showing when everyone is presenting?
A. Yes, although nothing is final -- http://jilbert.ca.sandia.gov/talk_schedule.html. If you are planning to present and your name is not on the schedule, please contact Jill Schwegel or Gene Hertel immediately to schedule your times.

Q. Is there a dress code?
A. Each presenter will be given an ASCI shirt to wear. The color will either be a cranberry or sand (see http://jilbert.ca.sandia.gov/shirts.jpg). It is recommended that you wear a black or khaki skirt or slacks. Please make sure that your administrative contact knows what size shirt you will need.

General
Q. What's the booth going to look like?
A. We have currently finalized the floorplan and the general look of the booth. The graphics shown in the rendering are only a mock-up of what will be displayed (in other words, ignore the theme and the content displayed on the posters).

CD and Other Handouts
Q. Is ASCI making a CD/DVD? Will it include the presentations made at SC?
A. A CD is in the works; however, at this time the plan is only include material that is available by the October 15th deadline. We have not discussed the possibility of issuing an addendum to the CD that would include material presented at SC. For additional information, contact Kay Fletcher, skf@lanl.gov.

Displays
Q. For presentations on the booth's 2x2 display, what resolution is "high-resolution"?
A. We are shooting for a display made up of four 1600x1200 Clarity cubes.

Q. How will the 2x2 display be driven? DVD player? Video CD player? Will there be a computer where we can dump a 10 GB movie file or a PowerPoint presentation?
A. In the past, we have used a PC cluster, DVD players, and a SGI to drive the wall. We integrated the systems with the display by running them through a switch with a video controller. User input was via a touch panel. This year, we are planning on having a SGI and I believe there may also be a cluster (configuration currently unknown). We will be running the PowerPoint presentations from a plasma screen that adjoins the tiled display. Hopefully, this will save us some set-up time and provide the user with a little more flexibility in how they choose to present. As to a place to dump a 10 GB movie -- you've got me there. I do believe we can accommodate the size of the movie, but you'd probably have to start downloading (or uploading) it quite a bit in advance. I suggest that you give call Jill Schwegel on this. She should be able to provide you with several alternatives.

Q. Is the 2x2 display suited for displaying "high-resolution" movies (and if so, at what frame rate?) ... or just stills?
A. The main idea of the display is to run "high-resolution" movies and simulations. The frame rate will depend upon the system you run it from and the size of the image. Last year, we ran movies on the SGI using xMovie. I believe the frame rate ran about 8-10 fps at 2560x2048 and 20 fps at 1280x1024. There are other alternatives and I am also open to suggestions. High-resolution stills are perfectly suited for use on the display, but I would suggest that low-resolution stills be displayed using the plasma screen.

Q. I have the same questions for the Multi-media plasma displays (see above).
A. The plan is to have anywhere from 4 to 6 plasma displays through out the booth. As mentioned above, one display will be adjoining the 2x2 display. The size is yet to be determined, but it will be appropriate for PowerPoint. I do have information on three of the displays since we will be bringing them with us -- two will be 61" NEC MP61P1's with a native resolution of 1365 x 768; and one will be a 50" Pioneer PDP-502CMX with a native resolution of 1280x768. What will be connected to them is yet to be determined. If there is interest or need, we may include additional displays.
