Manuscript Guidelines
Prepare your paper as described in the guidelines (the paper layout should follow the format of the "Style Guide for Abstracts of IEEE-Published Articles").
Style Guide
IEEETRAN.DOT User's Guide
Contributed papers are limited to four pages, invited papers are limited to six pages, and plenary papers to eight pages. If a paper exceeds these limits, the author must pay $200 per page for each additional partial or full page before the paper can be accepted. Payment is due in U.S. dollars by cash, check drawn on a U.S. bank, credit card (Discover, American Express, Diners, Visa, or MasterCard) or international wire transfer. Checks should be payable to IEEE/NPSS SOFE99.
What to Bring to the Symposium
Bring the original and two photocopies of your camera-ready paper, the completed copyright form, and sufficient funds to pay any excess page charges. Take the manuscript to the Publication Desk at the symposium before 12 noon, Thursday, October 28. Your paper will be checked for all requirements, indexed, and a receipt will be issued to you. If you are unable to attend, a colleague may bring your paper for you; be sure to include the two photocopies, copyright form, and any necessary page charges.
If you plan to distribute copies of your paper at the symposium, bring sufficient copies with you, as there is limited copy service at the hotel (however, there is a Kinko's two blocks from the hotel).

Oral Guidelines
Oral presentations provide a forum in which authors can present research results to a large audience. However, to make effective use of this format, authors must keep in mind that audiences can be quickly lost by illogical presentation or overwhelmed by too much material presented too rapidly. In the brief time allocated, authors should motivate the work, outline the methods used, and present key results. Because SOFE attendees represent a variety of scientific disciplines, some tutorial background is usually in order. Remember that audiences respond to the mode of presentation and the enthusiasm of the speaker as well as to the scientific content. Speak clearly and concisely.
Timing
Contributed oral presentations are allocated 15 minutes for the talk and an additional 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Invited talks are allocated 25 minutes for the talk plus 5 minutes for discussion. Session timings are listed in the program book to permit attendees to select talks they wish to attend. Consequently, session chairs will strictly enforce these time limits. A useful estimate is to allot one to two minutes for each transparency or slide prepared for the talk.
Presentation
Each author (or representative) should "check in" with the session chair at least five minutes before the scheduled start of the session. Inform the chairperson if someone other than the first author will present the talk. Talks will be called at the time scheduled in the program book. Session chairs have the responsibility of reporting "no-shows" to the publication committee. No-show papers will not be published in the Proceedings. All speakers are urged to prepare visuals in advance of the conference and to practice their talk. The success of the conference rests, after all, on the quality of the technical presentations.
Overhead projectors will be available in each session. However, slide projectors, VCR's and monitors will not be provided by the conference. Should these be required for your presentation, you must rent the necessary equipment at your own expense and see to its set up and removal. Please contact the Sheraton Hotel for further information.

Poster Guidelines
Unlike oral presentations, poster presentations give authors and attendees the opportunity to discuss results in depth, and permit authors to vary the presentation with each viewer. However, the key to a successful poster presentation is to prepare poster materials carefully.
Size of Poster Materials
The poster board area for each presentation is 4 ft. (48") high by 8 ft. (96") wide. Aisle space in front of each poster is limited and can become crowded. The size of poster materials should, accordingly, be easily read at a distance of a few meters. The title and list of authors, along with addresses and affiliations, should be printed in large, block letters. Small, poorly prepared graphs and tables require readers to stand close to the poster, blocking the view of your presentation from other attendees. The posting of pages of a manuscript is strongly discouraged. A few oversized graphs and tables with concise captions will better catch the attention of your viewer who can then be engaged in more detailed discussion.
Posters will be attached to the boards using pushpins. Extra pins will be available to presenters at each session.
Organizing Poster Materials
It is important to organize the materials logically, so that an interested viewer can grasp the motivation for the work, the methods used, and the most significant results. Try to guide the viewer's eye through your presentation in a logical order.
Attendance
Arrive at least 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled poster session to arrange your poster and be sure necessary supplies are present. One or more of the authors should be present at the poster for most of session and be capable of explaining it. Session chairs have the responsibility of determining whether papers have actually been presented. Failure to attend or adequately explain your poster will result in your poster being deemed a "no-show." No-show papers will not be published in the proceedings.
Participants are encouraged to leave their posters in place until the end of the day or, in case a second poster session is scheduled, until the end of the morning.
