The YAG Application

Overlapping Spot Nd:YAG Laser Welding of Batteries

View the YAG Control Panel

  • The YAG model is a specialized application for analyzing overlapping spot, pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding of 304L stainless steel cardiac pacemaker batteries. YAG was developed to lower peak temperatures near glass-to-metal seals.
  • YAG is an example of SOAR's versatility. Quite different from other SOAR applications, YAG is based on designed response surface experiments used to compare laser welding performance with different focusing lenses.
  • In addition to reducing heat input, YAG also allows the user to determine the effect of laser process parameters on weld dimensions.
  • YAG displays the assumed weld shape as it is changed by the user.
  • YAG enables continuous weld model output via "mouse-down" button clicks on the 2-D contour plots.
  • The application is not a general purpose model for pulse laser welding of other materials and thicknesses. Other SOAR applications should be considered for those more general weld problems.
