Cultural Resources

The History Program continues to support Sandia's cultural resources management efforts. DOE/KAO's consultation with the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office regarding seismic upgrades to Building 800 was successful. It was determined that the upgrade would have no effect on the potentially historic aspects of the structure. Further consultation on the rest of Tech Area I will be forthcoming. Our documentation for Tech Area I appears to be complete and we expect to turn the draft context statement for the New Mexico site into a SAND report early in the next fiscal year. The effort to document structures in Tech Area III and Coyote Canyon is ongoing. We are also progressing on a historic context statement for SNL/CA, having prepared building inventory forms on the structures there.

Retiree Picnic

Corporate Archives and History hosted a table at the Annual Retiree Picnic on May 24, 2001. The picnic provides an opportunity for the Archives and History Program to inform retirees of our services-we distribute fact sheets about the company's history, display the Sandia history books, and present posters that explain our work. We also make contacts for Sandia's historical information and artifacts. Responding to last year's call for artifacts, retiree Ed Hirt donated two photos of the 1957 Sandia staff that worked at the former weapons storage area at Rushmore Air Force Station, South Dakota. Ed also donated some memorabilia from the 1981 Family Day.

Retirees also help to identify unlabeled Lab News photos. Ed Clark and Don MacKenzie were excited to find a 1978 photo of themselves from a Lab News article about the 20-thousandth run of the Sandia Trisonic Wind Tunnel. John A. Smith also found a 1960 photo of himself as a young draftsman.

We always enjoy the picnic and the opportunity to meet the folks who created Sandia's history.

In 1978, Ed Clark and Don MacKenzie inspected a RVRTV-3 model in the Trisonic Wind Tunnel.
