Readiness Program Exhibit

The Readiness Program exhibit is now on display in the Bldg. 800 lobby and at the Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union on Juan Tabo. The Readiness Program was one of four safeguards tied to US ratification of the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty. Corporate Archivist Myra O'Canna prepared the exhibit and Michael Vittitow of Creative Arts designed the six posters that outline the leadership, technical expertise, and manpower Sandia provided for the Readiness Program from 1963 through its conclusion in 1975.

Robert O. Woods provided a Strypi model used in the Readiness exhibit.

Ernest Niper provided photographs and test certificates for the
Readiness exhibit. He also identified the NC-135 flight crew members.

New Scanning Project

In March 2002, the Corporate Archives was pleased to receive support from Hank Witek, manager of the Military Liaison and Knowledge Management Department, to scan Sandia's oldest, primarily classified, negatives. The negatives document Sandia's technical work from the labs' inception through the mid-1950s. The negatives are becoming brittle-the scanning project will capture and preserve the images. The first set of 6,700 negatives were scanned by the end of FY02. The scanned images will be useful within a variety of Sandia projects. They are available to employees with proper access and established need-to-know.

News from Still Photo

Archives assistant Shirley Morris is scanning photographs from Hans "Ed" Hansen's photo album. Hansen retired in 1986 from Safeguards Engineering with over 34 years of service. In 1970, Hansen worked on Strypi rocket tests for the Los Alamos Laboratory's Birdseed Experiment. For this experiment, Strypi rockets were named after different birds-e.g., Auk, Buzzard, and Egret-and some are pictured in the album. The album also includes photographs of the rockets used for the 1974 Australian eclipse studies.

In addition to specific scanning projects, Shirley also continues to index images in the Still Photo Collection. In the final quarter of FY02, for example, she catalogued 101,225 images and added 13,000 entries to the Technical Library's catalogue.
